Poverty in Mexico

  • In 2002, half the population in Mexico was living in poverty and one fifth was living in extreme poverty.  At the national level, in 2002 the rates for access to electricity, water and sanitation were 98, 90 and 80 percent, respectively.
  • About one quarter of those living in extreme poverty in Mexico reside in urban areas in the states in the center of the country.
What are the causes of poverty in Mexico?
Most of the time, the people who live in poverty in Mexico have garbage as food, and some days, they don’t even eat anything. This critical situation in Mexico is caused by individual, geographic and political factors.
The lack of education is one of the most significant factors that contributes to poverty. There is no access to jobs for non-educated people.
Statistics show that people who live in rural areas far away from the cities are poorer. This is caused by the lack of communication and transportation in remote rural areas. Because of this, governments can’t provide essential things such as drinkable water, affordable food, primary health care, and education. People who live there are totally isolated from the rest of the society.
The third and most significant cause of poverty in Mexico is the political economy of the country.

The bake sale!!! xD :)

On February 10th, 2011, we had a bake sale, that was our first attempt to raise money for a certain event, and a certain group of people (The orphanage). We raised around 3,500 dinars to take the orphanage ice skating. We sold lollipops, cookies and muffins, and for the first time, we think we did pretty well. The bake sale was held on the front porch in the International School of Belgrade. We hope to proceed with the ice-skating in the next few days. We hope to achieve our goal, which is to make the lives of the orphanage children more happy and carefree :).

What is AIMS?

AIMS stands for Action in Middle School. It is a class where we try and help our school, community, and maybe even the country that we are in in any way possible. We try to reduce poverty, help people with special needs, children from the orphanage, and the overall environment. We go to the International School of Belgrade, and are seventh and eighth graders. Our teacher is Mr. Vladimir. There are different ways we try to help the community and our school. We organize events to raise money for different people, and we try to make the lives of the kids from the orphanage and hospital happier, by taking them skating, organizing a basketball game, etc. So far, we have organized a bake sale in our school to raise money to take the children from the orphanage ice-skating. We advertised the event by making posters, and we raised about 3, 500 dinars. We sold lollipops, muffins, cookies, etc. We didn't take the kids ice-skating, yet, but we are planning to do that in the near future. Another idea we had was to organize a friendly basketball game for the orphans. We didn't yet raise money for that, but again, it is just one of the many ideas that we had.
